Room For Improvisation is a series of five concerts exploring the acoustic, architectural, and logistical qualities of the institutional art space. Centered around improvisation as both medium, process and result, the project transforms the Portikus garden — located on a small island and designated bird sanctuary — into a site for ephemeral musical dialogue after a period of lockdown.
Due to the nature of improvisation, this performance rocks the crowd into a collective trance while a certain dissonance remains present. The potential of mistake is constant.
Scenographies were reshaped for every concert using second-hand chairs sourced via eBay Kleinanzeigen — remnants of domestic life from across Frankfurt, repurposed as sculptural instruments and resting places. When not in use, the chairs remained in the space as ghostly traces of each improvised gathering, awaiting activation by visitors or the next sonic encounter.
